I HAVE A LAPTOP TO DONATE

WE OPERATE IN VARIOUS LOCATIONS BUT, SADLY, MAY NOT BE ACTIVE IN YOURS. IF NOT, DON'T WORRY AS THE BBC MAKE A DIFFERENCE SCHEME HAS LOTS OF OTHER ORGANISATIONS YOU CAN TURN TO.

IF NOT, DON'T WORRY!   visit the BBC Make A Difference - Laptops page and find local help.

BBC Make A Difference Laptops

YOUR OLD, UNUSED, WINDOWS LAPTOP IS VALUABLE TO A CHILD IN PRIMARY SCHOOL.   BUT LET'S MAKE DOUBLY SURE!

9 out of 10 laptops donated to us can be converted into Chromebooks. But 1 in 10 can't.  You could save yourself the time in preparing the laptop or us the time in collecting it if you could do one simple thing before you fill in the rest of this form.

Just 3 steps.

Step1 - Could you please just turn the laptop over so you can see the bottom.  On there somewhere you will see a Microsoft sticker.   Note that there may be others but look for the Microsoft one.

Step 2 - On that sticker there will be an indication of the version of the Windows version. It may say; - Windows XP - Windows VISTA - Windows 7 - Windows 8 - Windows 10

Step 3 - Make a note of that.  If it says Windows XP, then I'm afraid to say that we probably won't be able to use it. Sorry.  BUT THANK YOU!

Town only is good for Tara

I'm afraid that I cannot do anything with Apple Macs at this time. Sorry. 🙁

Want to meet Tara or do us a favour and drop it to a collection point?

I need your email address please

Can I have your mobile number please?

ooooh. Exciting. How many?

Tara needs to know where to pick the computers up from.

That's very very kind of you.   Could you please post your donated laptop and its power supply to me at; Tara the Tuk Tuk 10 Heath Road Helpston  PE67EG Thank you.   Tara. 💚💓💛

We will make sure that we operate a very Covid safe system here and would like to make sure that you will be wearing a mask when we meet and that you will tell us if you, or anybody in your household, is suffering from any of the symptoms or has had a positive test result.  Please help us keep as safe and well as hard as we are keeping you.

This is to protect us as a group of volunteer individuals that have come together at a time of need. Your data will be destroyed as best that we economically do, normally by installing an alternative operating system on the disk drive, however there is always some specialist company somewhere that could theoretically recover some part of the data. We are asking you to accept that we make our own individual best attempts to delete the data.
IF IN DOUBT. DO NOT DONATE.  SEE OUR WEBSITE FOR INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW YOU CAN DESTROY THE DATA YOURSELF.

ONE MORE THING before you hit send and go.  ONE MORE THING you can do to help kids who need laptops for their future life chances. ONE MORE THING you can do to help us. ONE MORE THING that you can do to help society. See those social media buttons on the left of the screen? Share a message with your kind and generous family, friends and the public in general. Tell them what you did and ask them to do the same. A child somewhere will be very, very, grateful for your help.

That's all we need at this stage. We'll get back. Thank you and keep positive. Smiling helps!   Prem and Tara 💚💓💛  07770833999
I'm sorry. I didn't have time to send any social media messages for you.
I helped you reach even more kids around the country by broadcasting your message on social media.

Frequently Asked Questions
We can accept almost any laptop that is under 10 years old.  If it’s under 8 years old and runs either Windows 8 or Windows 10, then there is a very very very good chance that it will be useful.  If it runs Windows 7 then there is a 80% chance that we can use it.

You need to make sure that it;

  1. Will start up into Windows (or whatever operating system is installed)
  2. Has a working power supply
  3. The laptop’s mousepad and click buttons work OK  (Or you have an external mouse you can supply)

If you are at all technical then this may mean something:   We need 64-bit machines as the Neverware software we use to convert them to Chromebooks does not work on 32-bit machines.

The process we use is to overwrite your Windows disk drive with another operating system.  This, in effect, deletes your data permanently. If you are worried about the privacy of your data, you should delete it all before you ship it to us. It’s relatively easy to do with a product called DBAN which is free and simple to use.

PLEASE DO NOT DONATE YOUR LAPTOP IF YOU THINK YOU WILL EVER NMEED YOUR DATA BACK.  THIS IS A ONE WAY TICKET AND ONCE YOUR DATA IS GONE, IT’S GONE.

When you fill in the form above, you will get an email from Tara within a few seconds suggesting what you may like to do next.  You will also be contacted by Jola Hall (our Chief Organisational Elf) who will provide you further guidance.

We will move as fast as we can as the need is so very urgent.

Tara loves drives in the sun.  Hates it in the rain as her hair (hood) frizzes. The answer is yes. If you are a reasonable distance from either Tara (Helpston) or one of the Laptops4kids Superheroes.   Jola will discuss the options with you.
That would be amazing and we would be very grateful for that effort.   Could you please make sure that it meets the minimum specification (see these FAQs for that info), make sure it boots and include the power supply.

Send it to;

Please do pack it carefully.  Thanks you for being a superstar and helping kids so very much!

Within seconds, Tara will have acknowledged your request. It may go to spam so look for it.  Her email address is tara@weddingtuktuk.com

Your request will be forwarded to the Laptops4kids Superhero in your area who will make contact and see if they can help you.  If there isn’t a superhero in your area, our Chief Organisational Elf (Jola) will be in contact to discuss what we can do.

Have a look at this link and you will see where they are.  Check back regularly as new superheroes are arriving all the time.

I NEED A LAPTOP FOR MY CHILD

We know it's terribly frustrating to have to magic up a laptop for each child. Click here to register your need.

Give your child Tara's love and explain that we will try as hard as we can to get them one the Chromebooks that have been donated by the immense kindness of others.

IN A NUTSHELL
Converting a windows laptop into a chromebook is simpler than it looks thanks to the CloudReady software that Google kindly made available for free to the world in Dec 2020.

With the government imposing a further lockdown on the 6th January 2021, Primary School children suddenly had to study online and from home. Many young families with multiple children suddenly found that they needed a Chromebook computer for each of their children. We can only imagine the stress and difficulty in finding even more money to buy those Chromebooks when the world of employment is so uncertain. Many parents are in an impossible situation.

Staring in a little village called Helpston, near Peterborough, we have rapidly recruited the help of wonderful individuals across the village, area and nation.  Each on volunteering a great deal of their time to helping get Chromebooks into the hands of desperate parents.

If you need a Chromebook for your primary school child or grandchild,  please register their need here.  We can't guarantee that we will be able to help but we will try our very hardest. At the very least, you'll get a nice email and a smile from Tara!

I HAVE AN OLD LAPTOP THAT I'D LIKE TO DONATE

We all have one somewhere. Find it and click here to register your donation.

If your laptop  starts up, has a power supply and is under 10 years old, please, please donate it to us. A child somewhere will be smiling a lot.

IN A NUTSHELL
Do you have an old Windows PC or Chromebook at home that you are not using any more?  We bet you do!  Almost everyone has.  In a cupboard, in the attic or under the bed.

If it’s under 10 years old, I can probably convert it into a Chromebook suitable for a local primary school child in desperate need for one.

All we have to ask is that it will power on and that you have a power supply.

Time is the issue here.  We need to use our old laptops to ensure the continuing education of our young children.  Every day makes a difference to their life chances. So please find that laptop and donate it fast!

Register you interest to donate here and we will be in contact to see how we can get it collected, converted and donated to a needy child at home.

I'D LIKE TO BECOME A LOCAL SUPERHERO

Anyone can do it. Very very little technical experience required. Click here to find out more.

So far, 21 superheroes across the UK have joined Tara and are doing this very easy conversion and getting Chromebooks to desperate parents in their area.

IN A NUTSHELL
Converting a windows laptop into a chromebook is simpler than it looks thanks to the CloudReady software that Google kindly made available for free to the world in Dec 2020.

After the necessary 2 minutes of faffing around to get in the windows laptop 'BIOS' screen, the conversion takes about 30 minutes and I have now managed to get a production line going where I do 6 at a time on my dining table.

However, as the volume of laptops ramp up, there is always a need for other to help doing this.  I would be grateful for the help and you would get to see Tara regularly to guarantee a smile!

If you have a little technical knowledge and can help, please take a look at this in more detail and I will be in contact to see how we can work together.

It's only been ...0... weeks since we started this effort in a little village called Helpston.
